Frequently Asked Questions

What is Green Lipped Mussel?

Green Lipped Mussel capsules contain a rich blend of natural proteins, minerals, glycosaminoglycans and a unique blend of essential Omega-3 fatty acids: EPA, DHA, and ETA all of which are necessary for the human body. These naturally occurring mussel extract substances are increasingly being recognized as helping joint mobility, cartilage maintenance, good health and general well-being. This unique combination of fatty acids is not found in any other marine or plant life. ETA is a glycosaminoglycan that can assist in the repair of damaged joint tissues. Studies have also found that Green Lipped Mussel inhibits the 5-lipoxygenase pathway, which leads to the formation of leukotrienes. Many of the products of these pathways have inflammation-supporting properties. An important step in synovial inflammation is the recruitment of leukocytes (white blood cells) into the joint synovial fluid and tissue. A number of growth factors, called chemokines or inflammatory mediators, are involved in recruiting leukocytes to the synovium. Leukotrienes are among the inflammatory mediators found in an inflamed joint.) Therefore by blocking the leukotrienes you can inhibit arthritis.

Green lipped mussel inhibits inflammation in the body. Although inflammation is normal under certain conditions, consistent or excessive inflammation can result in pain and damage to the body, including the joints. The human body makes several chemical mediators of inflammation. Levels of these chemicals in the body may be higher in people with rheumatoid arthritis who are experiencing symptoms than in symptom-free people with arthritis. Evidence indicates that controlling the production of inflammatory mediators in the body may help improve conditions such as arthritis, asthma, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease (including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), all of which involve elements of inflammation. The Omega 3 fatty acids can also play a great roll in control of bad cholesterol levels in the blood as well as maintaining the blood sugar levels, which greatly benefits diabetics and assists in weight loss. Another great benefit may be the improvement in mental ability.

The Maori People

The Maori are indigenous people of New Zealand, who have lived in coastline communities in New Zealand for centuries. Medical researchers started to study them because of their almost non-existent levels of arthritis or other destructive bone disease. Researchers began searching for what the Maori people had discovered as their own source of health and mobility, and found it in the green lipped mussels located only in waters of the New Zealand coast. Because the Maori would harvest the mussels growing naturally on the seashores and eat them raw, they benefited greatly from every nutrient found in the mollusk. This led researchers to begin exploring the benefits of green lipped mussels, and what they discovered was pretty remarkable.

What is Green Lipped Mussel?
Motion Health is pure green lipped mussel. We do not use fillers or marine cartilage. Using pure green lipped mussel ensures each capsule has the appropriate amount of EPA, DHA and ETA. Having one pure ingredient offers fewer contraindications when using with prescribed medications.

What is the difference between an OMEGA 6 and OMEGA 3?

Two basic categories of polyunsaturated fatty acids that have received a lot of attention relative to human nutrition are the Omega 6 and Omega 3's.

Omega 6 fatty acids are contained in all vegetable oils. Omega 6's are almost totally made up of linoleic acid (18:2) and its derivatives. Some of the Omega 6's are considered more valuable, such as GLA (gamma linolenic, 18:3) found in evening primrose and borage oils.

Omega 3 fatty acids are found to a limited degree in some plants but are contained in all fish and shellfish. For instance, canola and flax oils contain alpha linolenic acid (18:3). The Omega 3’s contained in fish/shellfish are from five to ten times more powerful in their biological activity than those found in plants.

Why is Motion Health Green Lipped Mussel a powder?

Motion Health capsules are pure green lipped mussel powder. Green lipped mussels are packed with lipids and omega-3 fatty acids that are retained throughout the processing. The mussels are freeze-dried at temperatures that are low enough to retain the benefits of the mussel meat, so taking the supplement gives you the same benefit the Maori people experienced when eating fresh raw mussels direct from the ocean. If the mussels were to be cooked and ground – as some manufacturers do when producing Green Lipped Mussel Powder - many of the nutrients would break down, and you’d be taking a product that offered little real benefit.

What is the difference between GLM and glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) precursor. GLM contains glycosaminoglycans as well as omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. This works together to reduce inflammation, limit further damage and help regenerate damaged joint cartilage and synovial fluid.

Green lipped mussel (GLM) is a functional food; naturally containing chondroprotective GAGs including

Glutamine (Glucosamine precursor) & Chondroitin Sulfate, Omega 3 fatty acids (ETA, EPA, DHA), Vitamin E & C, copper, zinc & manganese.

GLM is an excellent source of glucosamine and chondroitin, no further supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin is required when taking GLM.

There is no research to give us a therapeutic level of glucosamine; therefore we do not know how much is required to be useful in the body.

How is Motion Health’s GLM different than Sasha’s Blend?

Motion Health uses pure stabilized Green Lipped Mussel powder that has been temperature regulated throughout the freeze dried process. There is no added shark cartilage, abalone or other “marine cartilage” added. The Blue Ocean Environmental agency named green lipped mussel one of the top eco-friendly foods. Motion Health GLM powder does not contain artificial flavours; it is palatable when used as a powder, or easily swallowed in capsule form.

How is GLM different than Recovery?

Recovery is a combination of many active ingredients; including Nutricol®a bioflavonoid complex (a group of biologically active flavone compounds widely found in plants and citrus fruits they may help maintain the blood’s capillary walls and are considered to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.), methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) which can be a concern if sulfa based allergies exist, glucosamine hydrochloride, trimethylglycine, vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin E, l-lysine.

How is GLM different than fish oil?

Fish oil, made from the tissue of oily fish-such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, lake trout and sardines-has many health benefits. Fish oil contains important Omega-3 fatty acids, most notably eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In addition to EPA and DHA, Green Lipped Mussel powder also contains a unique omega-3 fatty acid called ETA (ecosatetraenoic acid), which has strong anti-inflammatory properties reducing joint swelling and pain, as well as chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine, antioxidants and cofactor minerals. These have a synergistic relationship that can help rebuild articular cartilage and synovial fluid within the joint capsule.

How is GLM different than krill oil?

Both green lipped mussel and krill oil contain the superior omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Krill oil also contains the antioxidant astaxanthin. Green lipped mussels are a natural source of antioxidants, and antioxidant co-factor minerals (zinc, copper, and manganese) in addition to the third unique omega-3, ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid), responsible for the regeneration of cartilage.

Important points when taking fish oil supplements:

The fish oil must contain Omega-3 fatty acids, not just "fish oil." Remember, it is from the Omega-3 fatty acids that we receive health benefits. The supplement should list the total amount of EPA and DHA on the label. You want to get a supplement where the total of the EPA and DHA adds up to the total amount of oils in the product. If there is only 350mg of Omega-3 fatty acids but the capsule is 1,000 mg, what kind of oil makes up the missing 650mg? The closer to the overall capsule size, the better.

The oil should be pressed only from the flesh of the fish. Some supplements are pressed from heads, tails, or internal organs. You don’t want a supplement made out of the inedible parts of the fish. The fish used for the oil should be health screened and disease free. This means the manufacturer needs to know where their fish is coming from and must assess the fish before including them in their processing plant. The fish oil should not have been molecularly distilled. Molecularly distilling oxidizes and alters the natural form of the oil. Sometimes the oil is molecularly distilled to remove toxins. However, the fish should not have been contaminated in the first place and so should not have required molecular distillation. If the fish in the supplement required molecular distillation, you have to ask how polluted the fish oil was before the distillation and decide if you really want to put that low quality of fish oil in your body. Another important factor regarding the quality, and safety, of fish oil is whether or not the fish oil is rancid. This is a legitimate concern and one that is increasingly worrisome. Rancid fish oil has a negative effect on the body, actually promoting heart disease and other chronic illnesses. The reason rancid fish oil is such a concern is because fish oil begins to oxidize as soon as it is extracted from the fish. The oil then begins to go rancid within days, though the majority of labeled fish oil supplements indicates that the capsules are good for three to four years. Further, because the oil is enclosed in capsules, consumers are not able to tell whether or not the fish oil is rancid. Fortunately, there is a solution to the issue of rancid fish oil. Fortifying fish oil with anti-oxidants, especially vitamin E, prevents oxidation. It is imperative then that manufacturers use the most effective form of vitamin E-gamma and delta-rather than the less effective (and less expensive) alpha tocopherol.

GLM Benefits Beyond Healthy Joints

Because so many of the nutrients in the green lipped mussel are retained during our freeze-drying process, Motion Health Green Lipped Mussel Powder offers benefits beyond improved joint comfort and mobility.

Skin Hair and Nails

The omega-3s in green lipped mussels can provide benefits both inside and out, and can support the health and appearance of skin, hair and nails. Two key glycosaminoglycans – dermatan sulfate and hyaluronate – can also significantly reduce the visible signs of aging by helping collagen and elastin stay healthy and pliable.

Immune System

A healthy immune system means everything, and Green Lipped Mussel Powder may help support the body’s ability to fight both viral and bacterial infections, as well as improving the production of antibodies, supporting wound healing. And because it supports healthy inflammation management, it has the potential to help manage healthy bacteria in the gut, where 80 percent of the immune system is.

Nutrition

Essential omega-3 fatty acids, proteins and carbohydrates in green lipped mussels contribute to the body’s total daily nutritional requirements, improving overall health, boosting endurance and energy levels and filling in gaps that may exist in even the healthiest of diets.

Anti-Aging

Green lipped mussels are a natural source of antioxidants, and antioxidant co-factor minerals (zinc, copper, and manganese) that help them work. These antioxidants come from the plankton that the mussels feast on. Antioxidants are naturally occurring compounds that help protect the body from ravaging free radicals. They do this by donating electrons to them and thus neutralizing them.

Free radicals are electronically unstable atoms or groups of atoms that contain at least one unpaired electron, and can easily bond with another atom or molecule to strip their electrons in an effort become stable. This can result in dramatic changes in the body. Free radicals cause damage to cells, inhibit the immune system, and lead to infections and various diseases such as cancer and arthritis. Many scientists hold free radicals responsible for the aging process.

Bones and Teeth

By supporting the health of surrounding tissue, there is less pressure on both teeth and bones, so they have the support they need to stay strong.

Nervous System

When nerve cells function better thanks to the lubrication provided by omega-3s, organs work better, muscles repair themselves more quickly and tissue regenerates at a faster rate.

Heart Health

Those omega-3s also help benefit the circulatory system, supporting blood flow to and from the heart and supporting the health of arterial walls.

Pet Health

A 2013 study from Canadian researchers found that green lipped mussel supplements contributed significantly to the well-being of dogs with joint discomfort, improving both pain and mobility during the two-month controlled testing period. “This shows the efficacy of a GLM-enriched diet, which should definitely be proposed as an adjunctive treatment to conventional medication,” researchers said. Motion Health green lipped mussel is also available in a pet formulation.
